Summer Adventures: Hawaii

July 26, 2026

Hawaii had always been on my bucket list of places to visit, so when I was asked where I wanted to honeymoon last year, I emphatically said Hawaii. And now almost a year later, I found myself visiting Hawaii for a second time---this time with my parents and the Twin and her family for my dad's 80th birthday and my parents' 50 anniversary. We took in the breaktaking views and savored the tropical, fresh eats.

The Sites:
Kīlauea at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island | Sea Turtles at Laniakea Beach on the North Shore of Oahu | 'Akaka Falls on the Big Island | Rainbow overlooking Diamond Head on Oahu

Hawaiian Cuisine:
  • Saimin- Hawaiian comfort noodle soup in a similar vein as ramen but with a dashi broth and spam topping
  • Lau Lau with Poi- pork wrapped in taro leaves paired with a starchy taro paste (poi)
  • Loco Moco- breakfast dish with rice, gravy a hamburger patty and a fried egg.
  • Shave Ice-icy dessert that has shaved ice rather than crushed like in sno cones.
  • Garlic Butter Shrimp-Famous in the North Shore of Oahu using local catches, our favorite was the spicy variety.
The Fruits:
Fruits just hit differently in Hawaii--their freshness and sweetness (but not too sweet!) brought so much punch of flavor to these tropical treats. We toured O.K. Farms on the Big Island and were able to sample soursop, lychee and longan as well as chocolate and coffee produced from beans grown on the farm.

The Hilo Farmers Market introduced us to ice cream beans, the smaller apple banana and the magic of the white pineapple, which is less tart and sweeter (again but not in a bad way) than a yellow pineapple.
And finally the humble papaya, spritzed with lime juice was a breakfast favorite. Much more sweet and flavorful than the papayas you can get on the mainland, this was what I missed most after the honeymoon last year.
