First Stop...Molly's Cupcakes

June 13, 2011

Project Cupcake: Commences!  I decided to go to Molly's Cupcakes as my first destination on my Great Cupcake Hunt since sista Min went here a few years ago. That was the first time I ever heard of a place devoted solely to cupcakes, so I found it only fitting to make this my first stop.  Molly's Cupcakes was also a competitor on Food Network's Cupcake Wars and the winner on that episode's show.
located at: 2536 North Clark Street, Lincoln Park, Chicago
Molly's Cupcakes as a bakery is super cute.  At the bar, customers can sit on swings...that's right, SWINGS.  I was so giddy when there were two empty swings for me and my partner-in-crime, DAVID PARK!
(the scarf/sweatshirt combo in june=unacceptable)
The menu offers an array of options: regular, center filled or create-your-own (you can pick your cake flavor, frosting, toppings---like m&ms or home-made ice cream to make it a complete delicious sugary dessert).  There's even a sprinkles bar near the silverware, which adds some extra cuteness to your lil cake.  I did some research and ordered the best selling cupcake: the Ron Bennington, which is a chocolate cupcake-filled with peanut butter, frosted with chocolate ganache and topped with Butterfinger crumbles.  David opted for the seasonal Strawberry Shortcake.
The Ron Benington Cupcake was at first not too sweet.  The chocolate was pretty dark and then I hit the peanut butter filling and boom, hello sweetness!  The combo of the peanut butter and the butterfinger crumbles added an oomph of sugary goodness, making the cupcake almost too sweet.  Def need a glass of milk with this one.  The cake was pretty moist and had a perfect frosting-cake ratio.  Priced at $3.75, head over to Lincoln Park for this cute lil bakery.

On a side note, David and I had a pre-cupcake meal at Del Seoul, home to the Korean Taco!  We stuffed our faces with Kalbi Tacos, a Bulgogi Banh Mi Sandwich and KIMCHI-TOPPED FRENCH FRIES. Who could ask for more?
Hello Kimchi Fries!
