The Beginning of My Buffalo Bucket List

June 19, 2014

It's official: I'm moving, again. My life has been pretty unpredictable and I keep finding myself moving every couple years to a new city. My new city beginning in October 2014: Tampa, Florida.

I'm excited to be back in Florida again, having lived in Miami for 2+ years and spent a couple months in Sarasota in 2012. But this means I need to get cracking on my Buffalo Cupcake Hunting and also need to start compiling a Bucket List of things to do/see/eat this summer.

Luckily I found myself crossing off one thing on my Buffalo Bucket List last night.

In the past, I've mentioned the Buffalo favorite Beef on Weck: a roast beef sandwich topped with horseradish, tucked inside a salty, caraway seed kummelweck roll. I haven't had great encounters with the sandwich but ventured into eating a Beef on Weck pizza last summer and last night ate a Beef on Weck sushi roll.

The restaurant: Seabar, a local favorite for sushi and a must go-to destination for the one and only Beef on Weck sushi roll. The roll consists of seared beef in the middle surrounded by rice and wrapped in beef carpaccio, but also topped with caraway seeds and a dose of salt and served with a horseradish mayo.
My dining partner and I both agreed that it just melted in your mouth. There was a healthy punch of salt, which has always been so shocking to me every time I eat a beef on weck sandwich. However, all the components of the sandwich in this sushi roll created a delicious bite that was the best tasting beef on weck I've had thus far.

It was a night of firsts for me. I had my first sake bomb but a more calm version of it. Instead of pounding the table to release the shot glass into the beer, my friend and I merely just poured it in. Party poopers? Maybe, but it was tasty nonetheless.

I'm told that I need to seek out the best beef on weck sandwich at Bar Bill in nearby East Aurora. Hopefully that'll be crossed off my bucket list but until then, I'm pretty satisfied with the variety of beef on weck options I've had so far in Buffalo.
