Best of 2016

January 5, 2017

2016 was an interesting year for sure: the Cubs won the World Series!!!!!, I dabbled in layered cake decorating, went on several food vacays, adopted my little furball- Basil, Twin Sista got engaged and I settled into my own place in Houston only to find out I'm moving from Houston next summer (new job and new city---here I come, Kansas City).

Bye 2016, can't wait to see what 2017 has in store.

Best of 2016

Favorite City: 2016 was filled with several mini food vacations: New Orleans, NYC and Austin. I loved all three trips but can you really top NYC? NYC brought me to some of the best food I've ever eaten and I can't wait to go back again someday.

Best Meal: The one meal that really stuck out in a year of good eating was the Korean BBQ at Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong in New York. I've been eating Korean BBQ my entire life but now am ruined for life because Kang Ho Dong served the most delicious meats and I can't have it every day out here in Houston.

And a close second to the best meal in 2016 was Tonkotsu Ramen with a corn/butter bomb at Ramen Tatsu-ya in Austin

Best Bite: There was a clear winner: Russ & Daughters Herring Fillet with Cream. A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.

Best New Ingredient: Shirataki noodles, aka the miracle noodle. Also zero calories and a great substitute for carb-y noodles.

Best Baking Adventure: Chocolate Babka was an all day event but it was well worth the time and effort. The beautiful babka was delicious and enjoyable to create.

Best Cooking Adventure: For Super Bowl L back in February, I made the tastiest little game day snack: Fried Poutine Poppers.

Best New Cooking Gadget: Love my thermopop and my mini springform cake pan but my revolving cake stand was so much fun to use to decorate layer cakes. Can't wait to test it out even more in 2017.

Best Cupcake: Both the salted caramel and carrot cupcakes I sampled from Maddiebird Bakery in Chicago. Simply delicious!
2016 By The Numbers:
50 blog posts
36 nutcrackers played
9 new cupcakes bakeries visited
3 food vacations
3 layer cakes baked
1 city lived in (this is smallest number in recent years!)
