The Restaurant Cupcake

February 19, 2012

I really haven't been too proactive about cupcaking in Sarasota so far. I do, however, love when I stumble upon cupcakes accidentally. Old friends (Jeffrey and Bob) came down from Saint Petersburg to have lunch with me yesterday. Jeffrey suggested we go to Square 1 Burgers and by total surprise, cupcakes were on the dessert menu!

It's not so often you see cupcakes as an option at restaurants. The only other time I've seen this was in Miami at one of my favorite restaurants, Books and Books Cafe (Weird name for a restaurant. And yes, they do sell books too). Sad to say, the Books and Books cupcake was oily and gross. This totally made me a bit skeptical about my second tasting of a restaurant cupcake.

It was actually nice to see the menu offer petite options since I am usually too stuffed to eat dessert when I go to a restaurant. We eagerly wanted to try four all flavors so we decided on a mini sampler of 3 flavors and then had a CUPCAKE SUNDAE with the fourth cupcake!
The cupcake sundae included two mini carrot cake cupcakes, vanilla ice cream, caramel, whipped cream, strawberries and bananas. When I managed to get a bite of the cake + ice cream, it was a shock of sugar. My teeth freaked out from the sugar overload (no more cavities, please). Cupcake sundae: not as genius and wonderful as I thought it would be.
As for the three mini cupcakes we ordered, we got one red velvet, one dark chocolate and one creamy "dreamy" vanilla. The red velvet and dark chocolate were moist and delicious. The vanilla, on the other hand, was totally dry, almost as if it had been sitting out for days. Excluding the vanilla, these were pretty tasty mini cupcakes! (My favorite was the red velvet).
