Running Around Town

April 24, 2012

A weekend with out-of-town friend visiting usually equals lots of eating out at favorite places around the city. From Friday until Sunday, I found myself enjoying an exciting weekend filled with amazing food and good times. Thanks for visiting, Emily!

Some highlights from the weekend:
HAPPY HOUR: The newest hotspot in Houston is the Austin-export Uchi. Uchi is also the sister restaurant of Top Chef winner Paul Qui's restaurant, Uchiko. Uchi serves modern Japanese cuisine and is quite pricey. (Twin Sista and her bf had a super expensive meal the other night). Anyhoo, every day they have a Social Hour from 5-6:30pm, which consists of drink and food specials. So if you're looking for a cheaper option at Uchi, this is perfect for you!

Prices range from $3-7 on the Social Hour menu. My favorite is definitely the Ham and Eggs sushi roll. I mainly love it because it tastes like SPAM (not spam but pork belly).
I took the opportunity at the swanky sushi restaurant to try Uni (Sea Urchin). Big Sista loves uni and I've always heard about how buttery and delectable it is. Our waiter got really excited for me when he heard it would be my first time trying it and told me it would "taste like the ocean." Well, I ate the uni after almost dying on some Japanese peppers, so I think my taste buds were not quite functioning well. The uni tasted tropical, like coconut or pineapple. Didn't love it. Didn't hate it. Maybe I'll give it another try?
PICK-ME-UP LUNCH: The Houston Galleria Mall is any shopper's idea of a really good mall. Lots and lots of stores and can you believe they have a Banana Republic Petite Store?!? Shopping at the Galleria also gives me an excuse to go to E-Tao for tasty soup dumplings and amazing crunchy noodles.
AFTERNOON SNACK: I've been dying to go to Nothing Bundt Cakes ever since I moved to Houston. Twin Sista told me they have all sizes of bundts, including a cupcake-sized bundt cake (which they advertise as a single serving but definitely is big enough to share with 2-3 people). A cupcake bundt?!? I'm in heaven!
located at: 5000 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas
Each bundt cake at the bakery is topped with their signature cream cheese frosting. There are nine flavors available. We decided on Chocolate Chocolate Chip after sampling this flavor. The small sample was amazingly moist and perfectly delicious. For $3.99, we shared the Bundtlet and enjoyed it just as much as our lil sample. My only complaint, it's refrigerated so it's a cold cake. But really, it's thoroughly delicious.
HOMEMADE DESSERT: My friends and I can't get enough of dumplings. We thought we'd have another dumpling night and share with Emily. Best part of the meal, the Boston Cream Pie that Twin Sista made for dessert. The recipe came from Annie's Eats blog, and it was the perfect amount of sweetness, sponginess, chocolate and cream. Cheers, Twin Sista!
