With a weekend off from work, the fiance and I took a weekend excursion to the Big Apple. It was my first trip there in eight years and I couldn't wait to visit old favorites and cross off a few bucket list items. And I had my first Broadway experiences and cannot wait to go back for more one day!
The Seinfeld Experience:
The Original Soup Kitchen for a soup snack (made famous by the Soup Nazi episode), which was quite tasty. A Famous Original Ray's Pizza experience turned into a short pizza crawl to a Not Ray's Pizza in Brooklyn (Ray's Pizza iterations were ubiquitous in NYC decades ago). (This Seinfeld clip explains it all and we even visited the Nexus of the Universe---1st and 1st). Both were simply delicious.
Korean Food:
Since I can't quite get delicious Korean food in KC, I made sure to get my fill on our short trip. Cho Gang Dol was on several top Korean restaurant lists I scoured. Home cooking at its finest and they even served a bean curd soup I never see at restaurants but was one of my favorite dishes my grandma used to make.
Michelin-starred Korean was had at the hand roll restaurant Mari. Everything was a hit except their version of jjajangmyun (black bean noodles), which sadly were too mushy. It was fun seeing Korean food presented in a fancy manner.
Baked Goodies:
I finally made the pilgrimage early morning to Dominique Ansel for their Cronut made famous over a decade ago. It was delicious and inventive but I can't quite understand the insane craze over them. But nevertheless I'm glad I finally got one!
And finally...a cupcake! After consulting a couple top cupcake lists, I patronized Buttercup Bake Shop, one of the few popular cupcake offerings I haven't tried yet in NYC. I counted 20 flavors available and got my first Ube cupcake for $3.75.
I loved that I tried my first Asian-flavored cupcake. It was less coconutty and more vanilla on the ube spectrum. It was a little too sweet but it was still tasty. And it made for a nice treat after walking off lunch for a mile and a half.
