Happy Paczki Day! Last year was the first year in about a decade that I didn't celebrate with my annual Fat Tuesday Polish doughnut (or sometimes just a bismarck doughnut suffices). I wasn't sure if I had any new leads on paczki in Kansas City this year but then I saw a post from a local, beloved bakery that said they were going to offer them this year!
After failing to get one on yestersday, I woke up extra early to snag one as soon as they opened today, on the official Paczki (Fat Tuesday) Day! They were offering custard filled paczki at all McClain's locations over the Kansas City metro only yesterday and today.
Although no paczki will live up to the first one I had in Buffalo over a decade ago, today's was a suitable substitute: it was a delightful, yeasted doughnut filled with a tasty custard.
On a side note: I am giving up desserts for Lent but will occasionally make exceptions like for my annual hamantaschen baking (which will be next week). Too bad I just received the new cookbook from Molly Yeh that is all about SWEETS! (I'll have to wait until Easter to start baking from it).
