Cupcake Hunt No. 3: Houston Round-Up

September 8, 2012

And so comes the end to yet another cupcake hunt for me. This is City No. 3 and I went to bakeries all across Houston and its neighboring suburbs.
Some thoughts:
1. ventured to 19 different cupcake bakeries in the span of a year.
2. Houston cupcakes were pretty mediocre compared to Chicago's.
3. in the first six months, I only went to 6 different places.
4. the average price of a Houston cupcake: $3.25.
5. my favorite cupcake came in the nick of time-my very last cupcake visit.

Chung's Best Cupcake in Houston Awards:
Best Looking Cupcake: Oreo at Three Brothers Bakery
Cheapest Cupcake: MMM Cupcake offers the cheapest cupcake in Houston at $2.50. Most cupcakes in the city were $3+.
Most Expensive Cupcake: If we consider the bundtlet from Nothing Bundt Cakes a cupcake, then it was $3.99. Otherwise, the most expensive cupcake was from Three Brothers Bakery and the cup cake from Fluff Bake Bar, both at $3.95.
Most Tasty Flavor: Kentucky Bourbon Pie from Gigi's Cupcakes. Enjoyed the intense cupcake packed with caramel, chocolate chips and nuts.
Weirdest Flavor: Pistachio Cardamom from Frosted Betty Bake Shop.
First Cocktail Inspired Flavor: Margarita Cupcake from Frost Bake Shoppe
Most Intense Cupcake: S'mores Cupcake from Ooh La La in Katy. I didn't actually blog about this cupcake. Topped with marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate chunks, it made it a lil difficult to eat. Just too much was happening. This was brought to me as a gift on a date. Sadly the cupcake and the date were both unmemorable and not that great. (hence the lack of blog post).
Worst Cupcake: Two-way tie. White Chocolate Macadamia Nut from Tea Cake Factory. Dry and too sweet.
Birthday Cake Cup Cake from Fluff Bake Bar. Frosting overload, way too sweet and too $$$.
Both were inedible and incredibly disappointing.
Best Cupcake: Chocolate Dulce de Leche from Sugarbaby's Cupcake Boutique. I went there just five days before my departure and was the saving grace of the Houston cupcake scene.
But if I was going for a broad term of cupcake, then the award goes to the Chocolate Chocolate Chip Bundtlet from Nothing Bundt Cakes. Simply delicious!
Runner Up: Blueberry Cupcake from MMM Cupcake. Moist and delicious and reasonably priced.

Special thanks to Twin Sista and Erin for accompanying me on more than several cupcake outings. I'm on to my new city for new adventures, maybe with a cupcake in hand.
