Best of 2024

January 5, 2025

When I sat down to reflect and write about 2024, I could not believe all that happened in the past year that I forgot about...but I suppose that is what happens the older you get---you forget more! ;) From the solar eclipse, the first Chung family vacation in over a decade, a European work trip, an engagement, exploring cooking with dried beans and a handful of food travel adventures---2024 was an eventful year!

Best Meal: The tasting menu at the Korean hand roll restaurant Mari in NYC was so delicious and inventive. Each hand roll was a treat both for the taste buds and eyes.

Best Bite: The Egg and Caviar dish from Mari was amazing. What is normally simple, comforting Korean food turned into a complex, layered dish with so many interesting and delicious flavors.

Best Food Adventure:
The conveyor belt cheese bar in Amsterdam, Kaasbar, was more thrilling than I anticipated. Each cheese was paired with different sauces and toppings making the experience surprising and delectable.

Best Cooking Adventure: Tea sandwiches and scones for a tea time at home with friends was a fun way to bring a delightful experience home.

Best New Baked Recipe: I found myself baking King Arthur Baking's Supersized, Super-Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies from 2024's Recipe of the Year several times this year because they were that good. They made me almost forget to try other chocolate chip cookie recipes until I baked pistachio chocolate chip cookies a few weeks ago

Best New Go-To Recipe: After a decade of making the same green smoothie, I found another recipe that I can't stop making on repeat: a Mint Chocolate Chip Matcha Smoothie

Best Cupcake: The three cupcakes I had in 2024 were all mediocre/pretty good so of the 3.5 star cupcakes I had, my favorite was the Ube from NYC bakery Buttercup Bake Shop. It was my first Asian-flavored cupcake that was beautifully purple-hued.
