Every Christmas, a select number of Hollywood elites receive a white chocolate coconut bundt cake from a local LA bakery, Doan's Bakery, gifted by Tom Cruise. Many celebrities have gushed about how incredible the cake is and it was even featured in an episode of the hilarious show, Hacks. After watching that episode of Hacks a couple months ago, the fiance's curiosity was piqued and then I found him ordering the cake with a post-Christmas delivery (since it was probably in such high demand during the holiday season).
We had friends over for a coconut themed meal to pair with the White Chocolate Coconut Bundt Cake.
The Menu:
- Trader Joe's Coconut Shrimp (from the freezer section)
- Coconut Saag from NYT Cooking
- Coconut Curry Chickpeas with Pumpkin and Lime from NYT Cooking
- White Chocolate Coconut Bundt Cake
The Curry Results: The curries I cooked with the fiance (linked above) were quick, easy to cook and filled with so much flavor that it was hard to believe they weren't simmering on the stove all day. If I had to pick a favorite of the two, I'd say the chickpea dish. It was so creamy, flavorful and delicious.
The Cake Review: The cake was tasty but not mind blowingly delicious. It was simply a great cake. It was a little dense in the way bundt cakes are and also not too sweet---the highest compliment an Asian person can say about dessert! I loved the cream cheese frosting and the surprise crunches of white chocolate chips throughout the cake. Our friend loved the little coconut surprise filling that had added lovely punch of coconut flavor.
Overall, it was a tasty, flavorful great cake but I'm not quite understanding the over the top hype from Tom Cruise's friends. But if there's anything that made me feel like I've had the best pastry ever shipped to me, it would definitely be the chocolate chip panettone from Roy (that has gone up $30+ since I purchased it 4 years ago).
