2026 Baking Fails So Far

March 19, 2026

2026 has had a few bakes so far but the first bake of the calendar year resulted in a fail. My second baking fail happened last week! But I suppose they weren't complete failures since the end results were still edible and delicious. (I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more frequently since I can be quite the space cadet).

This failure was a result of me omitting an ingredient AND not rewatching her instagram video of the making of these brownies while assembling the brownies. After realizing the frangipane was very thick and not spreadable to make a beautiful swirled brownie, I then watched the video. It was then that I realized I forgot to add the egg into the frangipane.

While not the most beautiful brownies, these were still delicious and my mistake didn't ruin the flavor. On a side note, I heard about these brownies on the Splendid Table and bought Samantha's cookbook Bake Smart to make them.

Baking Fail Number 2: Pistachio Hamantaschen from Tori Avey and Chelsweets

I was a week late in making my yearly hamantaschen but I went with a familiar dough from Tori Avey and wanted either a pistachio or matcha filling. I thought finding a pistachio cooking filling recipe would be the perfect filling for these filled cookies.
However, the pistachio filling was a ganache and I learned the hard way ganache does not belong inside the oven. Makes total sense now but I wish I had the smarts to realize this before I made that filling. A pistachio frangipane would have been correct choice for a baked filling (and I saw several frangipane filled hamantaschen recipes.
Half the ganache filling melted in the oven but then I used leftover ganache and refilled the cookies after they cooled. Delicious but not quite the correct execution.

*Here's to hopefully fewer baking fails this year but if they do occur, I hope they are just like these two: still edible and delicious!
